Hi
Before I introduce this Stranger View I would like to point you in the direction of www.WeSinkShips.co.uk
It is such a privilege to be exhibited by We Sink Ships as I have been a fan of both their own work and the work they exhibit for a long time now. Please visit them, check out my exhibit first obviously, but then STAY and cast your eyes on those beautiful double exposures.
Big thanks goes out to Andrew in Shanghai for being part of A Stranger View…
Peace,
Neil Thomas
I started A Stranger View in 2008 by tying a disposable camera to a bench on Byres Road in Glasgow. I returned to the same location to try a different take on the project, and you can see the results below. Best viewed by clicking the view larger link below each photograph.

Thanks to everyone who took a couple of moments out of their day to leave me a note. If anyone can help translate the Italian or German note please do so!
My favourite note was, “Just sat for a minute to people watch and realised how wonderful life can be. I am perfectly happy and your book gave me a chance to share that with a stranger. I hope life brings you that happiness it has brought me xx”
A disposable camera was tied to a lamppost with a sign (in Russian) asking people to take one photograph with it.
I will be putting the words one photograph in bold from now on.
Big thank you to Evi Trummer for setting this one up.

Glasgow again, however this time I wanted to see somewhere I would not venture into past 10pm…Kelvingrove Park. The camera was left on the bench for 24 hours…

I set up a disposable camera on a bench on Byres Road in the West End of Glasgow. Next to the disposable camera read a sign, “Hi! If you don’t mind could you please use me to take a picture of anything? My owner will be back later to collect me. Thank you! P.S Don’t steal, I am only a disposable!”

A Strangers View is a street based arts project by Neil Thomas Douglas. It is based on the simplest of principles. What do you see? What do you think?
Our cities and streets can be everyday to us, but what about to others? We never seem to take the time to look at our surroundings – but there is beauty and a story to be told everywhere. ASV invites the stranger to pause, look around and create a moment that can be shared. And tell their own little story.
Get involved! Find a spot in your little part of the world – a means of recording, such as a disposable camera or notepad and leave, with a note inviting strangers to do as they see fit – and let us know what happens! It’s not about eloquent sentences or perfectly posed photograph – it’s about seeing what another sees. A Stranger View. A Stranger View has been carried out by people from all over the world, including Shanghai, Berlin, Melbourne and Byers Road!
An example of a note would read something like this, “Hi, please use me to take one photograph of anything that catches your eye. My owner will be back to collect me later! Thank you x”.
